U3a Solent History

Welcome

Walking Group 4

The aim of Solent u3a is to allow older people no longer in full time employment to increase their knowledge in a friendly and supportive environment, learning from each other, through talks, interest groups or trips.

The u3a is a self-managed learning co-operative-all you need is interest and enthusiasm. No qualifications are required.

Solent u3a offers opportunities to share your knowledge, experience and talents with others over a wide range of interest groups and to pursue learning -- not for qualifications, but simply for fun.

The Solent u3a was established in 1987, is a charity in its own right (Registered Charity No. 1028438), and is run entirely by volunteers. Although we are currently centred on Fareham, we still like to keep our title of Solent u3a as we were the only u3a in this area when we started.

We are affiliated to the Third Age Trust, the national representative body for all the local u3as in the UK, of which there are over 800 at the moment.

What we do?

We offer our members the chance to take part in many widely different subjects and activities, including languages, music, local history, crafts, photography and walking. Our approach to learning is that it is for pleasure: there is no accreditation or validation, and there are no assessments or qualifications to be gained.

There are 400 members of Solent u3a. We have about 60 interest groups. Our group leaders are the backbone of our u3a coordinating activities between our members in their own homes, local centres or places to visit. They will welcome you into their group and try to accommodate any special requirements.

In addition to our groups we provide two speaker talks each month. The talks are varied and interesting, with the opportunity to ask further questions at the end of their talk. The programme for these are on the events page.

We meet on the second Wednesday and fourth Thursday of the month at Wallington Village Hall, Broadcut, Fareham. The hall opens at 2 pm, with the speaker at 2.15pm. There is opportunity to meet other members over a drink at the end of the meeting.  If the car park is full members can park in the Sainsbury's car park for up to 3 hours; although not essential please try to purchase something there if you use this option to help maintain goodwill.
