Andrew Negus returns to enlighten us more with tales of “Portsmouth - Harlots, Dung and Glory 3”

We see the Dockyard double in size in the new age of steam and 1850-1900 - Into the Modern World torpedoes arrive. The houses for the extra workers slowly swallow up the villages on Portsea Island. Corsets help to cut down prostitution, but the new Guildhall affords harlots a new venue. Hospitals, hotels and theatres are built, along with a high security prison. We meet Sherlock Holmes, Mr Polly, Peter Sellers and 3 very powerful women. Glory comes in the form of Portsmouth Football Club, and then the enormous contribution that The Dockies make in supporting the victorious Royal Navy in WW1. Portsmouth becomes a city and then needs a cathedral for its Bishop. Soon there is more poverty and the real threat of being Blitzed.
